Kissing Javier wasn't at all like she remembered from years ago.
Then, he’d been a little hesitant, unsure of his reception or maybe just inexperienced. Not now.
His lips moved gently on hers, and she felt it all the way to her toes, involuntarily standing on tiptoe in an effort to get closer. He tugged her against his chest, and deepened the kiss.
She put up her hands to push him away a little, but couldn’t make herself do it.
Finally, overwhelmed by her own intense feelings, she pulled back, and he gazed at her, a question in his eyes.
She inhaled the river's moist perfume. She couldn't speak, not really.
"I’m sorry about my beard."
She reached up to stroke his stubble. "It's heavier than it was in high school."
"Did it hurt?"
She shook her head.
"Good. I never want to hurt you." He touched her face gently.
Was this Javier, who’d once been so angry with her, being tender? She looked into his eyes, and he held her gaze, communicating without words.
Above them, an eagle soared, sun flashing on its golden feathers. Its powerful beak and talons were visible as it swooped down toward the earth.
She heard its hoarse wip-wip call, and a shiver ran over her.
Javier pulled her to him and kissed her forehead, her hair. Her hands rested against his chest and she couldn't help the smile that curved her mouth, the excitement speeding up her heart rate.
"Oh, Molly. My Molly," he murmured, just as he had so many years ago. "What's going to come of this? I'm starting to think we may have something together."
Yes. But it scared her. "We should get back." She doubted Trina and Aunt Lisa would get along for hours on end.
They walked back to the car, not talking, holding hands. The world around them was a pleasant haze.
Something sparkled on the path and she bent down to pick it up. She held up the shiny gold rock to Javier. "Look! I always heard there was gold along the Snake River!"
He chuckled, taking the rock and holding it to the fading light. "That's pyrite. Fool's gold." He held it back out to her. "Want to keep it? For old time's sake?"
She met his eyes and took the rock from him, folding it into her free hand.
The farther they got from the river, the more thoughts invaded her happy haze. She was trying to build a life here in Arcadia Valley, for herself but most of all, for Trina. But they couldn't go forward without him knowing the truth about Trina's conception, and how would he take it? With compassion, or with disbelief and judgment?
And what if she failed with El Corazon? That was the whole reason they were even out tonight. His family's restaurant was everything to him. Maybe he was just being kind to her while the restaurant fix was happening. It hardly seemed possible that he liked her for herself.
He held the door for her, and once she got in, he leaned down and touched her chin. "Hey. Don't overthink this.
